Why do some Christians refuse to be consistent when talking about hell?

Well for me, it's because I actually feel bad. I don't take joy or pride in "knowing" that your loved one is in Hell suffering for all eternity. So I hesitate to try to come up with a soft way to say yes, or redirect the judgment on God.
